Is World War III on the Horizon?

Part I

The world today is in dangerous ferment.  Any student of history can easily see the parallels between World War II and today.  That war was started because of the German dictator Hitler who came to power in a very normal, democratic way

Since World War II ended in 1945, the USA was determined to break up the USSR.  USA needed to be the sole power that ruled the world. One should remember, more than any other country, The USSR won WWII for humanity.  Here is a small graph to show the casualties of WW II.

USSR lost: 26 to 40 million

China lost 35 million: (was punished by Japan for sheltering American airmen who crash landed in China from the Japanese).

Germany lost: 4.3- to 7.4 million

USA lost approx. 405,399 casualties

UK 450,700approx casualties

The end of World War II led to the Cold War.  Though USSR had sacrificed the most, the free world (USA and parts of Europe) instead of gratitude began trying to curtail USSR influence on international politics. Still, the Cold War period was good for the world.  There was a balance of power between the US and the USSR.  This bothered the US, which wanted to be the sole power.  So, all its machinery and its friendly countries went into action -painting the USSR as black as they could through different media access, carrying out sabotage and covert action in the USSR, using bribes and the whole usual shebang to discredit and break up the USSR.

Finally, the first step was complete.  The Berlin Wall was destroyed.  It was November 9, 1989.  The real woes of post-WWII world began.  The USA decided it should be the sole leader of the “Free World” – the democratic world. which really meant the whole world

Now it began using sabotage covert operations, bribing, paying for internal disruptions and then the best thing happened.  Their bought man, Gorbachev came to power.  Now it was a waiting game.  Breaking the rules of the sovereignty of nations, media whitewashing of the USSR continued.  USA also began playing on nationalistic sentiments of the different USSR Republics.

Meanwhile the rest of the world was by no means safe.  There were the illegal US-NATO interventions, destruction or break-up of foreign countries, arbitrarily.  No one dared to dissent.  Just like with Hither and Sudetenland in 1938.  Europe followed an appeasement or support policy.  Few countries dared speak out.

Finally in 1991 the USSR collapsed.  Most of the republics broke away.

Since the 1991 break-up of the USSR, all over the world non-European countries, especially Muslim, Arab, African, countries and any country rich in oil, minerals or of strategic value were at risk.  USA, meanwhile, also coerced or frightened other nations to follow it to attack and destroy these very rich smaller, weaker, Arab nations without nuclear energy, or those of strategic importance like Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya who were minding their own business, in the overwhelming desire to be sole leader to rule the world.

Everyone knows the word democracy but how many stop to consider what democracy entails and who meets the criteria of democracy.  Democracy comes from Greek.  It means rule by the people, of the people and for the people.  It is when everyone has a voice and the same rights.  In our modern democratic world, this does not really exist.  Democracy today, especially in the country that calls itself the leader of the Free world.  USA is no longer free or democratic.  It is a country from which now, anyone can be deported without reason and not just deported but imprisoned in the US or a third country.  Worse still, in most democracies what is implemented is quite at variance from what is stated in the constitution.  In all democracies today there is a lot of discrimination of various kinds.  Society has become very divided into us and them – the Whites and the Blacks & coloureds; into religious divisions; into political divisions and into class divisions.  Of course, we all deny this is the case, but in fact, it IS so.

Anyway, to continue, USA wanted to be the leader of the world under almost US presidents.  But there was decorum.  There was some respect for the sovereignty of some countries – not all.   Still, it was a start (after colonialism).  There was Patriotism.  There was genuine love for their countrymen and some Presidents tried their best to look after the well-being of all its citizens. Abe Lincoln died freeing the slaves, for example.  But now we have a president who is following in the footsteps of one of the world’s greatest dictators – Adolf Hitler who was responsible for innumerable deaths and bringing about unwelcome changes in war and war tactics, along with his Japanese ally, Emperor Hirohito.

But we all know power corrupts and too much power makes the person lose track of what is right and what is wrong.  They become drunk on power, slaves to their negative impulses.   They forget their mortality. There should always be very strong checks on power that tyrants and dictators cannot evade.   It happened in ancient Rome, the mightiest empire in the world.  Surely it can happen again today. We saw this happen numerous times in history, a good example here, is Hitler because of the similarities between him and Trump – in both internal and international spheres.  When countries do well internally, they rarely go to war externally, because there is no need to focus on external incidents, happenings.  Hitler wen to war to prove his patriotism, overcome his insecurities and direct the country’s attention externally.  Trump is doing the same for the same reasons.

Adolf Hitler, like Trump today, as he gained power, he wanted more.  He thought he was invincible and could do exactly as he wanted.  Europe (UK, Italy, France) did not disabuse him.  Instead, they signed the Munich Agreement Sept. 30, 1938, for him to expand Germany at the expense of Czechoslovakia.  Earlier he had taken Austria because he wanted it and no one objected.  Now it was Sudetenland.  UK and France decided to appease Hitler rather than alienate him and agreed to German takeover of it.  Czechoslovakia was not consulted or informed about its fate.  It was betrayed by Europe especially France with which it had a military pact since 1924.  USSR was initially willing to intervene, but when UK and France refused, USSR stayed silent.  Germany got its way, and emboldened, captured Danzig in Poland in Sept. 1, 1939.  The Allies, shocked out of their stupor, declared war.  WWII had begun.

When France was quickly overrun by Germany, the rest of Europe was then very worried and signed the Allied Pact (UK, USA, USSR France and China Pact on Sept. 27, 1940).  But Germany was drunk on power and could not, would not, stop. WWII was fought between the Allies (UK, USSR, USA, France, and China) and the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan and Croatia) powers.  Everyone knows about the horrors of that war. The concentration camps and the experiments carried out on live human beings of all ages and both sexes.  We should not forget the use of biological and chemical weapons in that war and the terrible harm it caused to humans and the environment especially by Japan on China.  There was a 1925 protocol forbidding it though it was not properly enforced.  Japan used chemical warfare on China including the use of mustard gas and lewisite.  Germany used Zyklon B in its genocide programme against the Jews mainly and the Croatian Ustaša used it on the Serb, Jews and, Roma in their concentration camps too.

In WWII Germany targeted the USSR more than any other Allied country.  They did not target USA at all as USA helped Germany throughout WWII.  Germany threw its whole might only against the USSR (Operation Barbarossa, June 1941 and Operation Fritz targeting Leningrad, Moscow and the USSR republics of Belarus, and Ukraine.  Germany was defeated in this attack and forced back by USSR without help from any other Allied powers.  But USSR stood side-by side with Europe throughout WWII and was the first to enter Nazi Germany and free the concentration camps, the very first camp being Majdanek in July 1944.  USA on the other hand helped Germany throughout the war supplying them with many of their needs (Read Kovachevich, Exporting Democracy 2022 P.168-180) but treated German POWs who they termed DEFs very cruelly in the Rheinwiesenlager camps.

Since WWII USA has steadily been polarizing the world, abrogating power to itself, breaking international laws or rejecting them and frightening most of the world, not to interfere with its agenda but either to support it or be at risk of US ‘displeasure.’  Most countries complied and either positively supported USA’s agenda or stayed quiescent.

In 2025-2026, USA under Trump, began flexing its muscles.  It would be the sole world ruler like Hitler.  Ever since President Trump began his second term, he has started threatening independent countries with invasion. They are: Canada to become the 51st US state or face invasion; Venezuela that their President Maduro should be replaced, then he invaded Venezuela, arrested and removed President Maduro – leader of an independent, foreign country. This is against all international laws.  Like Hitler ‘s invasion of Austria, that few even knew about, and Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland). Action was taken.  Europe appeased Hitler. Trump wants Greenland. Greenland, he says, is important for US national security. That is all eyewash.  He wants to get his hands on Greenland’s minerals and threaten Russia.  He has also had problems with Mexico since his 2nd term began.

Greenland is a part of Denmark.  There was an article in Denmark PM Rejects Trump’s Greenland Takeover Idea, Calls for Respect, by a Staff reporter that read: Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark said there was no justification for the United States to annex Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.  She stressed that no country has the right to take control of another and that Greenland’s status is not open to negotiations.

He has weaponized the Justice Department.  It is no longer a place where one can find justice.  It is a purely partisan organ of the government for Trump that carries out his tyrannical orders and commands.  He has used it to fire high ranking, seasoned federal prosecutors and important government figures who did not obey him or contradicted him or even suggested a different course of action..  He has also ordered the attorney General Pam Bondi, his person, to investigate and prosecute any governmental figure that he says ’’wronged ‘’him.   I Well, is this not dictatorial behaviour in a Democratic country??!!

He has put the world on notice: he will do as he wishes. Trump breaks his word anytime it suits him.  As a presidential candidate, Trump had promised to disentangle US from foreign conflicts.  But after winning the elections, he changed his mind.  He started picking fights and threatening leaders of foreign countries.  He has also unleashed raw US military power on some countries.  These are rarely found in the news.  He ordered airstrikes on seven nations that have no fights with him, nor any common interests.  It could be to help Israel that is USA’s watchdog and enforcer.  They are and Syria, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Somalis, Nigeria and Venezuela

Trump, like Hitler, controls the leaking of misinformation to the public.  Earlier it was about the Corona virus; then he questioned the legitimacy of the free press, the federal judiciary and US electoral process.  After the 2020 elections which he lost, not only did he not concede defeat, but he filed dozens of unsuccessful lawsuits to challenge the results the election that he lost and claimed was ”stolen”.  Trump in Oct. 2026 sent the US National Guard to Chicago and Illinois under the pretext of fighting crime.  They filed a complaint to the Federal court to block this.  Trump also tried to deploy the National Guards to other US cities on trumped up pretexts.  Gov. Newsom of California called the move a “breathtaking abuse of power” and promised to sue.

During his second presidentship, now, he has openly stated “I have the right to do anything I” want to do.  I am the president of the United States.  But to stop presidents from becoming dictators there are always checks and balances.  Trump is steamrollering over them all.

Trump this term has used and is still using the National Guards, the Army, federal agencies and the courts illegally against US citizens.  He has deported huge numbers immigrants and US naturalized citizens without any just cause.  He says they are or were immigrants.  In that case only the Native Indians have a right to the USA Everyone else is and immigrant, including President Donald Trump

Hitler became a dictator. So is Trump.  No one could criticize Hitler and likewise Trump. He fires Federal workers at will, compels subservience from corporations to law firms, universities, to law courts and judges.  He has also decided to demolish part of the White House to make a ballroom only because that is WHAT HE WANTS.  Trump claims absolute power over all in the US and any country that he desires to own.

Some of the negative things he has done are: he weaponized the Justice department and so nullified its independence and ability to mete out justice and he has fired all personnel who stood in his way or did not bow to him.

He threatened universities when they refused to let him decide on their educational programmes.  Experts know their jobs much better than dabblers or amateurs.  He has signed a memo for USA to disengage from 66 international organisations because he said they do not serve US interests anymore.  International bodies are there to serve international interests – not that of ONE country only.  For Trump, it seems to me, USA is not a part of the world but an island that is totally by itself.  But the contradiction is that he wants to invade and conquer other places that he has no care or time for.  Perhaps he does not know what he really wants.  I hope he finds his peace, because all these jockeying for power, riches, acclaim, ordering deaths and so, are surely very traumatic.  Worse still, they are all ephemeral.

Of the 66 bodies he has disengaged from, 35 are international organisations outside the United Nations system and 31 affiliated to the United Nations.

Trump has withdrawn from numerous international UN bodies like ECOSOC In Africa, the Pacific, the Caribbean and Western Asia, The International Law Commission, International Trade Centre, Peacebuilding Commission, Peacebuilding Fund, Offices related to helping children, UN Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, UNFCCC, and many more.

He withdrew from the Paris Agreement for the second time in Jan. 2026 and is no longer legally bound to the agreement on cutting carbon emissions.  On this theme too, he also withdrew from the UNFCCC which also means from all agreements for climate negotiations.

Regarding the 35 non-UN organisations that he withdrew from, some are: the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats, Global Counterterrorism Forum, International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law, Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia, Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme and many more
